The little known
Cobergius vittatus
(Macquart) has a maritime distribution, while other species live in forests or at swamp margins. The known larvae appear to be fungivorous, saprophagous or predatory on insects such as ant larvae.

The series of large, spaced costal spines in combination with long wing vein CuA1+A1, approximately reaching to margin; absence of vibrissa, subcostal break in vein C, and setulae on vein R1.
Distribution
Members of this small fly family are found only in Australia (9 species), New Zealand and southern South America.
